"I am worthy & deserving of a healed BODY, an eased MIND, a revived SPIRIT, & a nurtured SOUL. I am ready to rise my inner Phoenix and Ignite my Fiyah."
SPEAK IT, CLAIM IT...."My Fiyah ignited!"
Jessica Phoenix is the full embodiment of living and loving fearlessly in the face of obstacles. She was given the symbolic name, Phoenix, by her earliest Dance Mentors.
Her mother put her in training at the age of 6, has loved Dance, and never stopped……until 2006 when Jessica was in a severe car accident shattering her pelvis and fracturing her jaw. Everything stopped, her dance life and college education. She was immobile, in pain, and under depression. Coincidentally, she had also been in an extremely unhealthy relationship at the time. This was the first significant “low” she had ever experienced in her young adult life. Of that time she always speaks, "I can only give abundant gratitude for what happened and consequently in those following years."
With a wonderful rehabilitation therapist, super parents, and incredible support system of family and friends, she was able to rise like the Phoenix and reignite her inner flame to burn brighter than ever before. She learned to walk, run, and dance again! Finishing her degree at Howard University in 2007, Phoenix moved to Atlanta to pursue Dance full time, and F.I.Y.A.H.® was born.
FULLY IMMERSING YOURSELF AMONGST HEAT....... & HIGHLY ACKNOWLEDGING YOUR INNER FLAME.This theme took over in her fearless pursuit of growth and dedication to living a life of passion and creativity. Over the next few years in Atlanta, she trained and lived her life as a Dance student, Performer, Creator, & eventually Teacher and Choreographer. Notably, she toured the West Coast and Canada with King Michael, MJ tribute show, nationally with the UniverSoul Circus, and internationally with iLuminate of America's Got Talent finalists. Her first major choreography work was for an MTV Networks commercial for international artist K'Naan. For her first professional Choreography job, she proudly chose to hire not just her agency mates, but some of the city's best raw unsigned talent and who had connected and supported her music and movement style. Atlanta became the seed for the early years of FIYAH, while studying under other great mentors, choreographers, and Masters, she began to create her FIYAH community of other talents who loved and respected music and movement of the African and Caribbean Diaspora. Phoenix created the first popular authentic weekly Dancehall class with Live DJ, formed Fiyah Squad, a ladies Dancehall training and performance group, and brought AfroCaribbean dance to stages, clubs, parties, and events throughout Atlanta.
During those years in Atlanta, Jessica Phoenix grew as a Diaspora Culture representative, AfroCaribbean dance practitioner, Community advocate, & Empowerment leader.
With more experience and vision, she relocated to New York to further ignite her FIYAH and continue to bring her mission and movement to life. In NYC, she immediately landed an opportunity teaching Dancehall and AfroCaribbean dance at New York City's premiere studio in Manhattan, Broadway Dance Center. And was frequently requested to bring her styles of Dancehall Fiyah and Afro Island Dance to stages, classrooms, and major platforms throughout NYC. Phoenix was also making her annual trips to Jamaica for continued inspiration, living and traveling cross-island, exchanging practices of Diaspora cultures, supporting local, and studying the music and movement. Although her focus there was not teaching, in 2013, she accepted the opportunity to be the only U.S. Dancehall representative to teach at DanceJA's International Dancehall Homecoming event. While there she worked with a dance group training in Hip Hop dance, and she taught a Afro Island dance workshop in Kingston the following year as well. While her home base was in New York, her versatile training and performance background afforded her the opportunity to continue travel throughout the U.S. and internationally, to Paris, Qatar, Mexico, and Guyana. Many of those years were truly living out of hotel rooms and suitcases. However, while still creating a flourishing FIYAH community in NYC, in 2013 she created the first of its kind Dancehall Theater production with the mission being, hiring untapped talent primarily of Black African or Caribbean descent, representation of Black Entrepreneurship & Ownership, and the promotion of preserved Diaspora Cultural Arts on major platforms. Yearly, Phoenix would train, choreograph & direct talent to produce vibrant and dynamic Afro-Diasporic and Empowerment performance and artistic works.
